Balance is not something you find; it is something you create.
In honor of World Meditation Day, we’re thinking about the different ways the electronic dance music scene can adopt healthier habits. Although great fun, our industry is generally not the healthiest. Ask any touring artist and most will tell you that all the late nights, long trips, sleep deprivation and partying can impact mental and physical well-being.
From the outside, it might seem like the world of EDM is ruled by party people. This, however, is not always the case. There are a number of dance music artists who live very conscious and healthy lifestyles, even on the road and in the thick of the nightlife. One such artist is house maestro Eric Sharp. Having channeled his sober and wholesome lifestyle into his music, he prioritizes values like health, spiritualism, veganism, surrealism and freedom. Its main objective is simply to deliver serenity to its listeners.
Last month, the Los Angeles-based artist dropped his five-track Emergence EP, where he not only showed off his house and techno production chops, but also delivered deeply philosophical and introspective lyrics. The previously released single, “Like Water”, featured the meditation teacher Doe Paoro and a beautiful new-age message about stillness. Likewise, “The Gift” featuring Zhao delivers a powerful statement on the commodification of art. Perfectly embodying balance, Eric Sharp’s music masterfully blends haunting, infectious grooves with thought-provoking lyrics.
